EPPI: A Unified Sustainability & Performance Index for Green Analytical Methods
EPPI (Environmental, Performance, and Practicality Index) is a comprehensive and standardized framework developed to evaluate green analytical methods by simultaneously addressing environmental sustainability, analytical performance, and real-world practicality. The project bridges academic research with applied scientific software development, delivering both theoretical rigor and practical usability.
I contributed to the design and implementation of the EPPI framework by translating complex sustainability and performance metrics into a structured, objective scoring system, and by developing software tools that allow researchers to apply the index easily in both online and offline environments.
Research Framework Overview
- Co-developed a unified evaluation model integrating environmental impact, analytical performance, and practicality.
- Introduced a dual-index system: Environmental Impact (EI) and Performance & Practicality Index (PPI).
- Applied Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) and Green Sample Preparation (GSP) principles across the full analytical workflow.
- Designed a transparent scoring methodology that minimizes subjectivity using predefined evaluation criteria.
Software & Visualization
- Developed a desktop application for offline EPPI calculation and benchmarking.
- Developed and deployed a web-based EPPI calculator for public scientific use.
- Translated analytical sustainability metrics into a numerical score (1–100).
- Implemented intuitive data visualization using a color-coded pie chart: green (environmental impact) and purple (performance + practicality).
Academic Impact
- Supported validation and dissemination of the EPPI framework in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
- Enabled fair and standardized comparison between analytical methods.
- Provided a practical tool usable by researchers, analysts, and professionals.
Recognition
“We also express our sincere gratitude to Eng. Ziad Shab Kalieh for his valuable assistance in the development of the software used to calculate the EPPI metric.”
